Dr. Manjit Singh Saren

(PJK, AMT, AMP, KMN)

Dr. Manjit Singh Saren is a Consultant Pathologist with more than 30 years of experience. He was Associate Professor in Pathology and Head of Department of Pathology.

He obtained his MBBS from the University of Bombay in 1965 and completed his Housemanship training at Hospital Seremban in 1965-1966 (Medicine, Paedriatics and Surgery).

He then served as Medical Officer (Surgery and General Medicine) in 1966-1967, Medical Officer (Honorary Captain) Malaysian Armed Forces Port Dickson and Bau Sarawak in 1967-1968, Medical Officer at Hospital Johor Bahru (Surgery Registrar) in 1968-1969, and Medical Officer i/c at Hospital Kota Tinggi and Hospital Mersing in 1969-1970.

He once again served as Honorary Captain Malaysian Armed Forces in May 1969.

He was a Trainee Pathologist at Institute for Medical Research Kuala Lumpur from 1970-1971, and Royal Post Graduate Medical School Hammersmith Hospital, London U.K from 1971-1973.

He obtained his post graduate diplomasDTM & H(Bangkok), Diploma in Pathology and Diploma in Clinical Pathology (University London)

While in Government Service from 1974-1996, he held positions as a Senior Consultant Pathologist and Head of Department at Hospital Kuala Terengganu, Hospital Ipoh Perak and Hospital Kota Bharu Kelantan.

He retired from Government Service in 1996.

He was re-employed into Government Service before joining Normah Medical Specialist Hospital, Kuching, Sarawak.

His teaching experience included lectures for Housemen and Medical Officers in Forensic Pathology, lectures in General and Systemic Pathology: Royal Perak College of Medicine, Ipoh and USM Kubang Krian, Kelantan. He was active in CME programmes in Pathology for Medical Officers and Consultants at Kota Bahru, Ipoh, Hospital Kuching and Normah Medical Specialist Hospital, Kuching Sarawak. He also held lectures in Pathology and Haematology:for Medical Officers preparing for MRCP, MRCOG and FRCS examination in General Hospital: Kuala Terengganu and Ipoh.

He has published one (1) paper in Malaysian Journal of Pathology and three (3) papers in Malaysian Medical Journal. He also has one (1) paper presentation at International level in Bangkok December 1993.

MSc Medical Molecular Genetics 1994, University of Aberdeen Scotland UK.

Worked in the Haematology Unit, Institute for Medical Reseach, Kuala Lumpur. As a Medical Research Officer in the unit was involved in the interpretation of basic haematology diagnostic tests such as full blood picture and haemoglobin analysis tests.

Head of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory, a molecular diagnostic laboratory for the diagnosis of alpha and beta thalassemia in the Unit. Has a number of publications on the thalassemias and other areas of interest.

Was the Lead auditor of the ISO 15189 for the Institute for Medical Research and is a Technical Assessor ISO 15189 for Basic Hematology Tests and Molecular Genetics for Standards Malaysia.
